Magellan Inn was built in 1993 by its founders JeanPaul Feuillatre a French man from the seacoast of Brittany and his Canadian wife from Toronto, Elizabeth Newton. They sailed the high seas and traveled to many countries for 25 years til they came to this beautiful coast of Costa Rica on the Caribbean side. Here they fell in love and decided of all the places they had seen in their travels this was where they would throw their anchor and stay to live ashore.
They built their home & business with much love and thought to detail and comfort. One feels the sense of European flare and taste mixed with the North American idea of comfort.
Each building, room and terrace was built & nestled into the natural environment, to not disturb the natural beauty of the tropical jungle. The sunken pool takes the form of the natural 10,000 coral reef. Where professors and students from the Smithsonian Institute have come to study the fossils embedded in the coral.
Terry, the daughter of Elizabeth Newton, with her family came to live in 1995 and since many years have been running this family kept business. With her daughters, she takes great care and pride in keeping up with the high reputation her parents have given the place over these years.
Being a nature & animal lover , you will discover and meet many animals here. From Macaws (Aras) ,Amazon parrots, iguanas, friendly dogs, Silkie chickens, sloths, a cute pony, a noble Spanish Andalusian horse and much more.
The gardens are artistically designed with the love of nature & flowers. A large variety of orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, ylang-ylang, ginger flowers, pepper and vanilla vines adorn the gardens, attracting the hummingbirds and butterflies.
The bromeliads provide a natural home for the poison dart frogs. In the evenings you can listen to the song of the Red-eyed frogs. Terry's daughter, Eve, protects the eggs in danger, til they hatch, becoming tadpoles, grow into frogs and then are set out into their natural habitat. She is always happy to give you a guided tour of the the gardens & animals!
One of her passions, a part from being an artist and nature lover, is also horses. She believes in Natural Horsemanship , training all her horses this way and teaching the community better and more humane ways to develop relationships with their horses. Also training people how to barefoot trim their horses, making shoes an unnecessary evil. Offering her services to all animals in need ,she works with Natural medicines from herbs, homeopathy, acupressure…
Practicing Yoga daily and attending a wonderful place just around the corner where free yoga & meditation classes are given to all who care to attend, on an open air wooden terrace floor on stilts over looking the beach and Caribbean sea.
Believing in natural and organic products, the fruit come from the garden and the eggs from the chickens. Bread is freshly baked and the chocolate is organic and grown locally.
As a family run Bed & Breakfast, the desire is to give you one of the most enjoyable , relaxing, interesting and informative moments of your trip.
